The Black Angels - The band behind True Detective's visceral trailer

If you’re like me you know HBO’s Sunday night programming is not to be missed. HBO’s True Detective starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey premiered last night and it did not disappoint. But what first drew me to the show (besides HBO’s solid reputation) was a trailer featuring The Black Angels’ track ‘Young Men Dead’ which sucks you in with an ominous opening guitar riff that perfectly sets the tone for the dark and mysterious series.

While the visuals above were not created by The Black Angels, the video encapsulates the raw grit and emotion that made True Detective’s premiere such an enjoyable hour of television. Pair the dark and haunting lyrics of ‘Young Men Dead’ with True Detective and/or this Keene State College production and you’re in for one enthralling experience.

The trees can’t grow without the sun in their eyes, and we can’t live if we’re too afraid to die.”

If you missed last night’s premiere of True Detective be sure to give it a chance. I’m fairly cynical when it comes to the quality of television shows these days but True Detective appears to be a real winner. For more of The Black Angels ‘Young Men Dead’ can be found on their 2006 release Passover, which itself is a fantastic album.
