Outside of Taos, New Mexico, you’ll find a community of people living in off-grid homes called Earthships  made entirely out of garbage.

Earthship Biotecture’ were invented by Michael Reynolds, who has been providing humans with the tools necessary to sustain themselves and the planet for over 45 years. By using carbon-zero technology in building plans and integrating all systems with food production, the designs are the first truly sustainable, independent models on the market today.

All Earthship Communities are designed with these principles:

  • Building with Natural and Recycled Materials
  • Solar/Thermal Heating and Cooling
  • Solar and Wind Electricity Production
  • Water Harvesting
  • Contained Sewage Treatment
  • Food Production
