Honourable Mentions in no particular order: Bryson Tiller, Young Thug, Joey Bada$$, Vic Mensa, Isaiah Rashad, Jazz Cartier, Big Krit, Earl Sweatshirt, Meek Mill, Big Sean, YG, Ty Dolla Sign, Kid Cudi, Ab-Soul, Mac Miller, Danny Brown, Tory Lanez, and Logic.
10. Travis Scott
When Travis Scott first popped onto the scene I wasn’t entirely convinced by him. He seemed to be Kid Cudi 2.0, but after his impressive mixtape run and phenomenal two studio albums, one cannot dispute Scott’s work ethic and his brewing status as one of hip-hops biggest acts.
9. Tyler, the Creator
Tyler, the Creator is a polarizing figure. You either love him or hate him - one thing is for certain Tyler can rap and produce his ass off. Like Kanye, Tyler is not just a rapper he is an artist and has his fingers in many pies from his highly successful fashion brand Golf, to his tech startup Golf Media, to all the other things this creative workhorse does. Tyler, the Creator is a mogul in the making, maybe it’s too soon to call him the next Jay Z (business wise).
8. ScHoolBoy Q
Groovy Q aka Schoolboy Q is a bonafide hip-hop star with everything he puts out he continues to solidify his status in music. He’s charismatic, always honest and when he’s not busy clowning his rap friends and pondering retirement, he is in the studio cooking up the music we love to hear.
6. A$AP Rocky
In the post Drake reign A$AP Rocky has the ability to become a hip-hop brightest star. While he hasn’t exactly done that much in terms of new music in 2016 - Rocky’s next few moves are crucial. If he can continue to harness his massive fan base and utilize his prowess in music, acting and fashion he will one day be king. To truly achieve this goal, he simply needs to have a larger music output whether it’s in the form of more high profile collaborations or simply staying relevant by coming to us on the big screen.
5. Chance the Rapper
Chance the Rapper is an impressive figure - sincebursting onto the scene with his impressive 10 Day mixtape there has been no stopping young Chancellor Bennett. He has gone on to drop three critically acclaimed projects (Acid Rap, Surf, Coloring Book) had a major role in Kanye West’s, Life of Pablo and other countless high profile collaborations all while remaining an independent artist.
4. Vince Staples
Vince Staples seemingly came out of nowhere to be one of hip-hops most lyrical and versatile young artists in the game. This often slept on, Long Beach native makes vivid, introspective music that you cannot help but be pulled into.
Future is without a doubt one of the hardest working artists in the game. He’s constantly putting out music. Almost to the point of putting out too much music. His output is starting to devalue his albums when they come out because we constantly have new music and don’t have enough time to properly digest the albums. However Future can’t seem to do wrong, the quality of the output remains high and fans love him making him one of the games most popular artist.
3. J. Cole
J. Cole is hip-hops ninja, he moves in silence, drops impressive albums then disappears. Loved by many and loathed by some - Cole is arguably won of the most skilled emcees in the game.Whatever your views, J. Cole is a legend in the making.
2. Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick Lamar, the new king of the West Coast is a lyrical beast who can do no wrong. Whether it’s dropping his own outstanding projects to destroying other artist at their own songs as a featured guest. Lamar is not a rapper to be taken lightly - We cannot wait to see what he comes up with next.
The undisputed current king of hip-hop. Numbers and the quality of music doesn’t lie, Drake has had an impressive run that has no near end in sight. Eventually all good things sadly do come to an end and when it does is Drake the last of the rap megastar? There’s no way of telling for sure, but what happens after his reign (if it comes) is exciting.
